As a Jewish teenager, Alexander Grothendieck was taken in as a refugee during World War II. He is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century and a radical pacifist who, from 1970 onward, developed a distinct, almost prophetic ecological worldview. His name is famous for the way he restructured mathematics (schemes, toposes, new cohomology theories) and for his break with the scientific world based on moral and ecological convictions.
Collège Cévenol was a Protestant, pacifist school where many persecuted people were protected and where he discovered his fascination for mathematics.
