Built from 1761 to 1771, the Place d'Armes is a vast rectangular square 125 metres long and 50 metres wide, entirely paved. The buildings surrounding the square symbolize the different powers: in order to complete the cathedral, which symbolizes religious power, the architect Jacques François Blondel erected the Town Hall, representing the municipal power, the Guard Corps (now the Tourist Office), which allows the exercise of military power and the Parliament for the judicial power.
