Château du Pflixbourg

The Plixburg site was occupied very early, perhaps since the Bronze Age, to be reoccupied in the 13th century. Located at an altitude of 425 metres, it holds an important military position, it is a garrison castle, a real lock between the plain and the Fecht valley.

It served as the residence of Conrad Werner of Hattstatt, the imperial bailiff, at the end of the 13th century. His wife Stephanie, Countess de Ferrette, also died here.

Having had several owners from the 14th to the 15th century, it came into the hands of Gaspard de Schlick, vice-chancellor of Emperor Sigismund. It was sold in 1434 to Smassmann de Ribeaupierre and was apparently destroyed in a conflict between the new owner and the Sires of Hattstatt. Made uninhabitable, it is, therefore, abandoned to nature.

Pflixburg has a polygonal shape and a continuous patrol path. It contains a dungeon, a cistern, dwellings and communal areas. It is divided into three levels: basement, ground floor and a floor composed of the rooms of noble dwellings. This castle was built in one go with granite as the basic material

It was included in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments in 1968.

A CASTLE - A LEGEND:
In the ruins of the Pflixburg dungeon still appears a White Lady. Legend has it that a beautiful princess was once metamorphosed by a fairy into a monster, half woman, half dragon. Only the kiss of a knight could restore her to her former form.
