Built in 1679, this imposing work of pink sandstone, bricks and ashlar is the only remaining gate of the fortifications designed by Vauban, executed by Tarade Louvois, minister of the Sun King, who laid the first stone by sealing under its left jamb a lead box containing the minutes of the ceremony, coins and medals.
The old passageway was walled and a marble plaque commemorating the 1814 siege of the town supported by Commandant Schweisguth was affixed on 10 June 1919.
