Plateau of Langres

The Langres plateau is a high plateau in France. It is the source of the Meuse. It lies north of Dijon where several rivers spring up. The central place in the area is the medieval fortified town of Langres. The following rivers originate in this area: on the west side are the sources of the Seine and the Marne. These rivers flow into the Channel at Le Havre. On the south side lies the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea: the sources of the Saône are only a few kilometers from the sources of the Meuse. The Saône flows south via the Rhône. On the east side lies the watershed with the Rhine: there the Meuse borders the Moselle area. The Aube also springs here.
