In the first half of the 19th century, Metz was a typical garrison town, home to several barracks. Since 1720, it also hosted the "École d'application de l'artillerie et du génie."
Considerations for a merger of the various sites then led to the construction of a central pioneer barracks in a square in the city center at the edge of the arsenal. Groundwork began in 1833, but construction did not start until 1841 and was completed in 1844. Colonel Firmin-Claude Parnajon was responsible for the construction execution. Hewn stone blocks were used as building material.
