What if you discovered a centuries-old obelisk?
Erected in 1796, the Altar of the Fatherland is the symbol of the nation's civic-mindedness.
The one in Thionville is the only one preserved in France.
The monolith was dismantled by order of the First Consul in 1799. It became a simple monument to the dead in the cemetery of Thionville, and was returned to its place in the center of the city in 1948.
It proudly bears the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre, two decorations given to Thionville in 1920 and 1948 for its resistance and bravery, which can be found in the 1792 citation "Thionville and its garrison have well deserved the Fatherland".
