The Shrine of Our Lady of Betharram is a Marian shrine located in the commune of Lestelle-Bétharram in France, in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
According to some authors, the origins of the sanctuary of Betharram date back to the eleventh century, when, under the impetus of St. Bernard, centers of devotion and Marian faith arose everywhere in Europe. The crusaders, returning from the war against the Moors in Spain, knelt at the feet of the Madonna to thank her for her successes and to pay her homage to the rich spoils of war. Betharram also became one of the main stops for pilgrims from France and the whole of Europe to the sanctuary of Compostela in Spain. The name appears in its form as Gataram for the first time in 1493.
