Rheinau-Gambsheim Weir

The Gambsheim weir is a weir on the Upper Rhine, used for generating electrical energy and simultaneously reducing the increased flow velocity of the river caused by previous river straightening. It is located at Rhine kilometer 309. The weir, situated at the border of the Baden municipality of Rheinau and the Alsatian municipality of Gambsheim, was completed in 1974 in German-French cooperation. The structure achieves a dam height of 10 meters and consists of a barrier on the German side, two locks, and a hydropower plant on the French side, along with the crossing road connection between France and Germany. In 2006, a fish ladder, also known as a fish pass, was put into operation on the eastern of the two islands between which the power plant is located. The German-French border also runs over this island. The Iffezheim weir, located 25 km downstream, is built in a mirror-image arrangement – the lock and the power plant are located on the German side there. The next road crossing upstream is the Kehler Rhine bridges, and downstream it is the Iffezheim weir. Since 2017, the construction of an additional cyclist bridge, parallel to the road, has been underway. The completion of this longest aluminum bridge in Europe took place in spring 2019, and the inauguration was on June 23, 2019.
