The Kembs-Niffer Lock is located in Upper Alsace, at the eastern end of the Rhine-Rhone Canal at its transition to the Rhine side canal. It is owned by the state waterway management Voies navigables de France. Since 2005, the lock has been listed as a historic monument.
In the late 1950s, the Rhine-Rhone Canal east of Mulhouse had two connections to the Rhine: the actual eastern section of the canal, which led northeast towards Strasbourg and reached the Rhine, as well as a southern connection, the Hüningen Canal. This initially ran southeast until it came within a few hundred meters of the river near the municipality of Niffer. From there, it ran parallel to the river upstream, to connect to the Rhine near the municipality of Hüningen through a lock towards Basel.
