La chiusa Kembs-Niffer si trova nell'Alto Alsazia, all'estremità orientale del canale Reno-Rodano, nel suo passaggio al canale del Reno. Il proprietario è l'amministrazione statale delle vie navigabili Voies navigables de France. Dal 2005, la chiusa è protetta come monumento storico.
Alla fine degli anni '50, il canale Reno-Rodano possedeva due connessioni con il Reno a est di Mulhouse: il vero segmento orientale del canale, che conduceva a nord-est nel territorio di Strasburgo fino a raggiungere il Reno, e una meridionale, il canale di Huningue. Questa inizialmente si dirigeva verso sud-est, fino a trovarsi a poche centinaia di metri dal fiume nella zona del comune di Niffer. Da lì seguiva il fiume a monte, parallelamente, per connettersi al Reno tramite una chiusa vicino al comune di Huningue, in direzione di Basilea.
