Covering an area of 8,470 ha to the west of Laon, between the Oise valley to the north and the canal from the Oise to the Aisne to the south, this forest massif, made up of old seigneurial woods, private woods, royal woods and ecclesiastical woods, is one of the largest in the region after the forests of Compiègne and Retz.
The forest of Coucy Basse and that of Saint-Gobain formed one and the same forest massif before the great clearings of the Middle Ages. It belonged to the lords of Coucy from the 10th to the end of the 16th century.
The entire massif is integrated into the European ecological network "Natura 2000".
