The village of Craonne, known today for the famous song "Chanson de Craonne" was the scene of fierce fighting between French and Germans in the beginning of WWI. In April-May 1917, what was left of the village was destroyed by the French artillery. The place then became a "red zone" and a "new" village was built on a lower site, between 1921 and 1927, mainly thanks to financial help from Sweden that financed the town hall. The site of old Craonne is managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Here you will find an arboretum and a short route with information boards to find traces of the old village...
