The master builder Vauban was the architect of most of the fortifications that were built in the 17th century on the north and west side of the city, overlooking the sea. This was to protect the prosperous city, which was also a refuge for privateers, from the naval fleet. In 1674, when France was at war with the Dutch, it was aptly named Bastion Hollande, built on the west side of the city. The ships had to sail past the cannons, which were aimed at the entrance of the harbor, to reach the sheltered port.
