De bouwmeester Vauban was de architect van de meeste van de versterkingen die uitgevoerd werden in de 17e eeuw aan de Noord en west zijde van de stad, met uitzicht op zee.
Dit om de welvarende stad, die ook een toevluchtsoord voor kapers was, te beschermen tegen de Marinevloot.In 1674, toen Frankrijk in oorlog met de Nederlanders was, kreeg het de toepasselijke naam Bastion Hollande, aangelegd aan de westzijde van de stad. De schepen moesten om in de beschutte haven te komen varen voorbij de kanonnen, die op dit bastion gericht waren op de ingang van de haven.
