The county of Wormhoudt was founded in 1067 and was part of the County of Flanders. Today, Wormhout, located at the Peenebeek and the Ijzer, is the main town of the canton. This rural town has remarkably managed to preserve its traditional characteristics thanks to a well-maintained heritage and a vibrant community life. Here you will also find the oldest windmill in the Low Countries (1183). In addition to the picturesque Grand Place with its beautiful kiosk, Wormhout is proud of its many green accents that are spread across the landscape like so many natural points of tranquility. The tourist facilities (e.g., the recreation center at the "Etang des trois sources" or the Three Springs Pond) are expanding rapidly, while economic activities are well integrated into the regional context.
