The castle of Equelbecq is in the shape of a large square, flanked by 8 turrets. A band of white stones encloses the half-height castle, signifying the considerable and distinguished power of the local nobility
(feudal) lords. The building, which is accessed by two bridges, is surrounded by moats.
It is assumed that a first castle in wood existed from the 9th century to protect itself from the northern (enemy) invasions, but there is no evidence that it existed at the present location. The last general restoration of the castle dates back to 1606, a date that we could read on the tower before its collapse in 1984. At the beginning of the 17th century, it was taken advantage to install numerous windows along the walls, walls whose thickness in some places exceeded their foundations by one meter.
The castle and its outbuildings were inscribed in the inventory of Historical Monuments on 24 July 1944. After the collapse of the keep (tower of castle) in 1984, a committee for the protection of this heritage of Esquelbecq;
This action has been classified as a historic monument. of the entire site made possible on September 17, 1987.
The castle of Equelbecq is not open to the public. But you can notice the following from the fences: the dovecote, dating from 1606, the French garden bordering a wooded park, the porter's house (1590).
On the square you can notice the inn of the castle (1615), whose gable is decorated with rune signs.
