Rocroi gave its name to the Rocroi Massif. That dates back to the Paleozoic Era or the Primary. More specifically from the Cambrian Ordovician, about 500 million years ago, these stones were deposited. And even for geologists, this was quite a long time ago. It is one of the oldest rock formations on the French-Belgian border. This area was then a piece of seabed, on which thick layers of sediments were deposited (mainly clay and sand). After these layers were deposited, they were folded during a period of mountain formation, which is called the Caledonian fold or Caledonian orogeny. Caledonia refers to Scotland, because there too the layers of cuttings were folded and transformed into mountains. Only then were the swampy deposits from the Carboniferous period deposited on top of it, which we know from the coal seams, a little more to the north. Where can you still find these layers in Belgium today? Use your own simplified geological map.
