In the heart of the Massif des Vosges, Labaroche is a small, peaceful, picturesque mountain village with an extensive network of some thirty villages.
Surrounded by a generous, unspoilt natural environment, the village offers peace and quiet, fresh air and a wide range of sporting activities such as mountain biking and hiking.
Labaroche is home to the remains of Alsace's highest fortified castle, Château du Hohnack, which was dismantled by order of King Louis XIV. You can explore it on foot, admiring the landscape of alternating meadows, forests and hills, and on some days the majestic Bernese Alps can even be seen in the distance.
During your stay, visit the woodworking and heritage centre, housed in a former sawmill. Here, you'll discover the old machines used to work this natural material, as well as over 800 antique wooden toys, all presented by enthusiastic guides offering fascinating tours. This museum is a real nugget!
During the First World War, Labaroche was caught up in the tragic Battle of the Linge, and during the Second World War, 90% of the commune was destroyed by bombing in the winter of 1944-45. It was a turning point in the village's history. From April to November 11, visit the Linge Memorial to understand the trench warfare and admire the valour of the Poilus.
It's easy to discover Labaroche with your family: take a copy of the "fun walk - the Hohnack castle" guidebook, available from the Tourist Office reception desks, and set off on a hike while solving age-appropriate riddles.
