Located in the former prisons of the bailiwick, the museum displays a multitude of objects and documents on the history of Marchiennes and its region. The city developed around an abbey founded around 630 by the Merovingian notables Adalbaud and Rictrude. It was one of the oldest and most powerful abbeys in the North of France and Belgium and left its mark on our landscape until the last monks left after the revolution of 1789. Remains of this rich past are still visible. Other themes from Prehistory to Modern Times are also evoked, the discoveries of Gallo-Roman excavations, the industrial past with the mine and the glass factory, the trades and games of the past, the two world wars... The museum also presents a collection of works by artists such as Loseleur, Labisse or Moral testifying to the intense artistic vitality instilled by our region through the ages.
