The Marchiennes History Museum awaits you, nestled under the porch of the town hall, the former entrance pavilion to the Benedictine abbey. Here, every stone has a story to tell, and every room has a surprise in store for you.
Guided by Anne, a passionate visitor full of anecdotes, you?ll travel back in time: from prehistory to the abbey?s heyday, from troubled times such as the siege of 1712 to unexpected treasures such as a collection of antique toys or works by Félix Labisse, the surrealist painter born in Marchiennes.
The visit unfolds in six captivating rooms, culminating in a superb 1791 relief map that lets you visualize the town and its abbey as if you were there. A real ?wow? moment that appeals to the curious and the passionate alike.
What do we particularly like here? The warm welcome, the ?hidden treasure? aspect of the place, and the impression of traveling through more than a thousand years of history? all without ever getting bored.
