The island was artificially created by digging a canal to supply the Joany mill in the 19th century. It stretches about 300 m long and about 100 m wide. Owned by the city of Châtellerault, it is home to an aged poplar grove. An ecological site, several species have been recorded there, such as the kingfisher and the beaver, as well as rare plants like the bulbous corydalis and European dodder.
