The Trappist nuns who returned from the monastery of Riedera in Switzerland to their native France in 1816 were divided by the founder of the order, Augustin de Lestrange, into the short-lived foundations of the Monastery of Forges and the Monastery of Frénouville. From the Monastery of Saint Archangel Raphael in Forges, a first group of nuns established Notre-Dame des Gardes near Cholet not far from the Monastery of Bellefontaine in August 1818. Still in the same year, the nuns who had left Forges for a foundation in Bégrolles-en-Mauges in 1817 joined this foundation and renounced their previous plan. Finally, in 1821, the remaining sisters who stayed in Forges were also transferred to Gardes.
