Description

Listed as a historic monument since 1926, Basse Fontaine Abbey owes its foundation to Gauthier II, Count of Brienne and Lord of Ramerupt.
In 1143, he invited monks from Beaulieu Abbey to settle in a quiet, peaceful spot in the Défaut forest, on the banks of the River Aube and close to a clear fountain.

At Basse Fontaine, the Premonstratensians devoted their time outside liturgical times to evangelizing the local population, welcoming pilgrims, administering parishes, studying sacred texts, practicing liturgical music and singing. Breeding livestock, working in the vineyards and in the fields are also part of their daily routine.

All that remains of the Abbey, founded in the 12th century, is part of the cloister and former farm buildings.
The former cowshed was renovated as a home in 2021 by new owners Marine and Julien, who are also working on setting up a small family farm.

The association "Les Amis de Basse Fontaine" was created in 2021.
