Originally, the Porte Serpenoise is a vast vault which, in the rampart, marks the southern limit of the Gallo-Roman city. In 1903, the dismantling of the urban fortifications led to its relocation and remodelling. The German authorities reduced it to about a quarter of its size and crowned it with four corner towers taken from the old fortifications. This symbolic sign in the city remains a monumental curiosity, a reminder of past times thanks to the engraved inscriptions that recall episodes in its history.
