The Faculty of Natural Sciences is part of the University of Montpellier. It is located in the north of Montpellier, on the Triolet campus and also on the Saint-Priest campus. Montpellier, which already had an established Faculty of Medicine, a School of Pharmacy, and a renowned Royal Society of Sciences (founded in 1706), and was also a city of national renown for science, saw the creation of a Faculty of Natural Sciences following the decree of March 17, 1808, which established nine Faculties of Natural Sciences in France. On July 25, 1809, another decree structured the faculty, and four successive decrees appointed the professors. Initially, the faculty was endowed with seven chairs: applied mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, zoology, botany, and mineralogy, making it second only to the University of Paris in terms of the number of chairs. These symbols are represented by the ceremonial silver scepter, commissioned in 1819 and worn during solemn ceremonies. The scepter was made by goldsmith Placide Boué based on a design by Toussaint-François Node-Véran. The first dean was Daniel Encontre, appointed for ten years under the authority of the then rector, Charles-Louis Dumas.
