The Regional Natural Park Scarpe-Schelde extends into the French department of Nord in the Hauts-de-France region. It is located in the border area with Belgium, Walloon Region, Province of Hainaut.
Founded in 1968, the nature park was the first of its kind in France. It covers an area of 43,000 hectares. 48 municipalities make up the park, with 12 more associated, representing a total catchment area of around 160,000 residents. The territory, characterized by a relatively flat elevation profile, is heavily influenced by a dense network of watercourses. The Schelde, Scarpe, and the Canal de Pommeroeul à Condé are the main arteries, from which extensive drainage and irrigation ditches testify to the former use for mining and industrial development.
