The Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park is a French Regional Nature Park, established in June 1989 on the initiative of three former regions: Alsace, Lorraine and Franche-Comté. It unites 189 municipalities and a total population of 238,000 in 20161, and extends over four departments: Haut-Rhin, Haute-Saone, Vosges and Territoire de Belfort. The 3,000 km2 makes it one of the largest in France.
The park covers the south of the Vosges, from the valley of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines to the gates of Belfort and Luxeuil-les-Bains and is organized around the Hautes Vosges, the highest part of the massif, including the 14 peaks from 1,300 meters above sea level.
It is one of the largest and most populated French regional nature parks; it borders and in fact includes partially different urban units from the Alsace plain and the Belfry gorge, such as Colmar, Mulhouse and Belfort.
