This name is of recent origin and results from a "historical collage" mixing a medieval fact (the presence of the Bisops in St. Jean Pied de Port during the great Schism between the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th) and a modern historical reality (its use as a prison in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries).
