The hospital was founded during the Middle Ages. A convent, a graveyard and a dwelling formed the new hospital, named Sainte-Marguerite. It was erected by bricklayers : Louis Coutereau, Martin Dutreau and Pierre Ardouin, for the Duke of Epernon in the early 17th century.
Several constructions enlarged the hospital during the 19th century, made by different architect sent by the Gironde departement.
There are several cells dedicated to the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostella located within the hospital.
