To the north of Périgueux in Périgord Vert, the Grotto of Villars is one of the largest underground networks in Dordogne (over 13 km explored to date). The Room of the Sea Urchins, the Candle Room, the Grand Balcony, … the infiltration waters have created a remarkable setting: the ceilings, walls, and floors are adorned with calcite, fine stalactites, and countless stalagmites, wonderful draperies, and eccentric flows.
The Grotto of Villars houses another treasure, prehistoric paintings created 17,000 years ago with manganese and ochre, applied with a finger, a hairbrush, or blown in powder form. Some, like the rotunda of horses, are covered with a fine film of calcite that gives them a particular blue color. To be discovered with emotion: the scene of the bison and the sorcerer, a rare human representation of prehistoric art.
