Just 8 kilometers from the Lascaux Cave, in a valley surrounded by woods, the village of Saint-Amand-de-Coly – one of the most beautiful villages in France – is home to a spectacular abbey, founded over 1000 years ago by Saint Amand.
This abbey, made of Sarladaises stones and typical lauzes from the Black Périgord, is considered the most beautiful fortified church in the region and invites contemplation. It's hard not to be enchanted by the bell-tower-porch of the abbey of Saint-Amand-de-Coly, standing 30 meters tall, distinguished by its immense ribbed vault framing the entrance door of the church.
The entire history of this imposing structure is narrated on the interpretation trail, but you can also borrow an audio guide at the tourist office to discover the secrets of this defensive building.
