In the western Vosges, Fort de Bourlémont is an important part of the eastern frontier defensive system set up by General Séré de Rivières after 1871. It was built in three years from July 15, 1878 to July 15, 1881. It was protected by 3 to 7 metres of earth to enable it to withstand the impact of black powder shells without damage.
This fort has remained in its original state, it allows visitors to discover beautiful masonry, to understand the life of a garrison as it was at the end of the nineteenth century.
