Situated on the hillside above the village of Domremy-la-Pucelle, the Basilica of Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc (also called the Basilica of Chenu Wood) is the monument of national recognition to Joan of Arc. The first stone of the building was laid on November 3, 1881, in the immediate vicinity of the place where Joan would also have heard her voices. The architect Paul Sédille was entrusted with the construction of the monument. Inside, the basilica is decorated with large mosaics and paintings by Lionel Royer representing the life of Joan of Arc.
