A wonderful viewpoint on the Garonne and the Bec d'Ambès
Endlessly facing the banks of the estuary, Macau’s riverside architecture takes its inspiration from countries on the other side of the world...
Visitors are often surprised to discover two charming little kiosks on the riverbanks.
As well as offering a wonderful viewpoint on the Garonne and the Bec d'Ambès, with stylised roofs (one is hexagonal with glazed tiles and a heart-leaf border), these "pagodas", which date back to 1888-9, give the riverside a distinctly Latin American flavour!
They once marked the entry to the Chateau Biré, owned by the famous Dussaud wine traders, who travelled extensively in Argentina (very similar kiosks are often found at the end of piers in Buenos Aires). This is almost certainly the key to one of the region's little mysteries!
