"Near Hautefort, at the foot of the hill, the Font Gourdou with its spring and its wash-house was frequented daily by the washerwomen, at a time when washing machines did not exist. The outward journey was easy but the return was very difficult. Climbing the steep path and then the hill with a wheelbarrow loaded with wet clothes required a great deal of strength.
Why was this place named like this? I can't provide any official document but simply report what Mr Célérier, who had old archives in his hands, told me: ʺAu During the Hundred Years War, a Gourdon family was massacred in the Lot by the English. A teenager escaped the carnage and took refuge in Hautefort. In 1183, during the siege of the castle of Hautefort by the English and Spanish troops, this precious water point was courageously defended by a group commanded by Gourdon...
