The village of Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin is a commune in the Barade forest located on the highest hills of the Périgord Noir in the Dordogne, surrounded by a diverse landscape offering wonderful scenery.
In Rouffignac you can visit, before or after Lascaux, the Grotte de Rouffignac, also known as the cave of the hundred Mammoths, whose cave paintings can be dated to the final and middle Magdalenian period, i.e. 11,000 years before Christ.
The architecture of the village of Rouffignac-Saint Cernin-de-Reilhac differs from that of the surrounding villages due to its tragic history during the Second World War. On 31 March 1944, the village of Rouffignac was all but destroyed by incendiary bombs. Only the church with its portal dating from 1530 and its flamboyant interior along with some neighbouring houses were spared. The village was entirely rebuilt from 1948 onwards.
