As its name suggests, La Salvetat is a former "sauveté" or place of refuge, founded in the 12th century . The pope Eugene the third confirmed the rights of the Rodez chapter on La Salvetat by a bull from 1147.
In the beginnings of the sauveté, every inhabitant received a patch of land to build their own house in the protected perimeter. The chapter which was the sauveté's lord received the taxes for the ownership of these lands. The village was fortified during the Hundred Years' War and some traces of the walls still exist as we can see with the St Anthony' Gate and the village' plan. The former moat was there until the 1950's.
