The quarries have been exploited since Roman times, and are used for quarrying, crushing, sawing and sculpting. Espace Simone features an exhibition of stone tools and Jaumont stone fossils, as well as the military periods of 1870-1871 and 1914-1918. Jaumont stone, a contraction of "Jaune mont", is a granular Jurassic limestone that owes its distinctive color to iron oxide. The quarries, where it is still mined today, cover former iron mines.
By 2023, the site will not be open to tourists. A series of industrial works is planned, making it impossible to welcome visitors.
To visit the quarries, you need to be in a group with a bus. For safety reasons, it is strictly forbidden to visit the quarries by private car.
For Espace Simone, visits only in the morning from 9am to 12pm, minimum 10 people. Call 09 52 07 45 05 to make an appointment. No visits on Saturdays and Sundays.
