The arboretum at Maison Güth in Hoste is a discreet treasure trove, containing some forty tree species, both local and exotic, each more surprising than the last. They were collected over 50 years ago by Joachim Güth. Here, for example, you can admire a giant American sequoia. It is open to visitors every day (access from the rear of the Güth house, rue du petit pont).
The arboretum tells as many stories about trees as it does about trees in history: What happened after the visit of a President of the United States of America to King Louis XVI? What did a Jesuit evangelizing in China leave us? A poet and a musician found inspiration in a tree that is also of interest to hat makers, and another that was once coveted by brickmakers, gunpowder makers, basket makers and bakers. Another, whose use was decisive during the great battles of the Hundred Years War, and trees that have advanced medicine.
These mysteries are revealed during guided tours led by a passionate scholar. Guided tours on request.
