Description

The 1914 / 1918 national necropolis for prisoners of war is located on the Route de Verdun. Covering an area of around 5 hectares, this cemetery contains the graves of French prisoners of war and civilians who died in captivity in various camps in Germany. The cemetery, which contains 1,298 graves and 2 ossuaries, was inaugurated on September 12, 1926. At the end of the central alley stands a monument, the work of sculptor Fredy Stoll who, during his captivity at Graffenwohr in Bavaria and with the help of his fellow prisoners, created this statue carved from a block of granite.
The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023.
