The Château de Berg, formerly known as the "Residence of the Abbots of Echternach," has been listed as a historical monument since 2003. The village of Berg-sur-Moselle is a remarkable jewel due to the monuments that have accumulated there throughout its history. Berg-sur-Moselle has always been, in a way, the capital of the Abbey of Echternach. A first castle was built around 1258, although some writings refer to an earlier castle erected around 950. It was destroyed shortly after the 14th century during a fierce struggle between the lords of Rodemack and the Bishop of Metz. The castle in its current form, rebuilt after the clashes of the mid-17th century, is the impressive building that we admire today, its majestic mass dominating the village. Raised to the north of the church (built in 1737), the castle is surrounded by high walls with its gardens spread over a beautiful plot of just under 1 hectare. The castle is a very elongated rectangular building with two wings returning at right angles on the main facade. The roof is entirely slate and fixed with nails. It has 3 floors of 9 bays each. In 915, the year of his death, Count Reginard of Lorraine and his wife donated their property in Berg-sur-Moselle to the Benedictine Abbey of Echternach in Luxembourg. In 1952, after the death of the owner, Miss Koch (a wealthy Luxembourg family) who lived alone in the castle, the property underwent a period of abandonment of 6 years. Then it was Mr. and Mrs. Jaud, teachers in Thionville, who bought the castle in 1960. A danger order had even been issued by the town hall of the time because there were rockfalls on the roadway.
