Mentioned as early as 849, the parish church of Vic has had a complicated architectural history. Built on a brick island (linked to the protohistoric salt production) on the site of a Gallo-Roman temple, (dedicated to Minerva, Apollo and Mercury) the primitive Romanesque church was rebuilt around 1300 in the Gothic style. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1882 in the neo-Gothic style. The cemetery, originally adjoining the church, was moved outside the walls in 1785. Conceded to the abbey of Gorze for the bishops of Metz - who had made Vic the capital of their Temporel (1228) - the church is dedicated to Saint-Marien, whose hagiography would have in fact borrowed from the lives of various more or less legendary saints. A rectangular tympanum, sculpted in 1308, skilfully depicts edifying episodes in the lives of several Saints Marian. It is classified as a Historical Monument. On the outside walls, numerous epitaphs were hammered on during the French Revolution. The interior is rich in numerous objects classified as Historical Monuments. It is here that the painter Georges de la Tour was baptized on March 14, 1593. Free entrance, guided tours to be booked at the Pays du Saulnois Tourist Office on 03 87 01 16 26.
