The original building was created at the end of the 11th century by Thierry II, Duke of Lorraine. At the end of the 12th century, it was replaced by a new church, the western part of which was built on the limestone terrace. The entire church was built with great care, and the stonework and carvings were executed with great skill. The few differences between the old and new decorations are proof of the sculptor's skill.
The choir's overhanging position on the slope of the land necessitated the presence of a large lower church to support it. So this church has the distinction of having two churches in one!
The upper church boasts treasures such as the 15th-century Anointing of the Body of Christ, altarpieces from the second half of the 17th century, and a stained-glass window commemorating the Great War.
As for the lower church, the Sainte-Catherine chapel houses a rare polychrome wooden crib from the first half of the 18th century and a pulpit from the Capuchin convent.
The church itself comprises a single nave span, divided into two to the east of the transept.
The main nave is divided by a line of two isolated columns. A chapel was built on the south side of the crypt in the 15th century, and decorations were added in the 18th century.
Outside the summer season (July and August), the building is only open for guided tours (with the exception of the Journées du Patrimoine weekend) organized by the Office de Tourisme de l'Ouest des Vosges.
