The American cemetery at Thiaucourt lies at the very center of the Saint-Mihiel salient, from which it takes its name. Most of those buried here lost their lives during the offensive to reduce the salient in September 1918. The cemetery is home to 4,153 men and women, whose graves are marked by a white marble stele. This makes the site the third-largest American necropolis for the First World War. The Memorial at the far end of the cemetery features a chapel and a room with a map of the Saint-Mihiel salient and the names of the 284 people whose bodies were never found.
A 13-strong team is responsible for maintaining both the cemetery and the Montsec monument. The site is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), custodian of American cemeteries and memorials abroad, which honors the service, actions and sacrifice of the U.S. armed forces.
