Eglise Saint-Jean et Saint-Loup

Description

The church of Saint Loup de Chappes dates back mainly to the 12th century, but the apse and the south arm of the transept were added in the 16th century. The nave is entirely covered with a 16th-17th century grisaille ceiling, bearing the coat of arms of the Dukes of Aumont, Lords of Chappes. The church has a Latin cross floor plan, with a single nave and a grisaille-painted ceiling. The eastern walls of the transept arms include a chapel to the north, and the sacristy to the south, framing the right choir bay which ends in a three-sided apse. A timber-framed bell tower stands at the transept crossing. The church is adorned with a series of 16th-century stained glass windows. The first stained glass window was installed in 1537, as the date indicates, in the south arm of the transept, which had just been remodeled: its theme is the life of Saint Loup, patron saint of the building. The other three large stained glass windows adorning the choir were probably installed when this part of the building was completed in the mid-16th century. Covering the entire height of the vaulted ceiling, they are painted in grisaille and silver yellow, with sanguine; they depict the Passion of Christ and his Resurrection. Cracks and subsidence in the church in 1844 tested the solidity of the stained-glass windows, which were restored by Didron in 1897-1898. After further damage caused by the Second World War, they were again restored and refitted by Labouret in 1948. The nave bays (7 to 16) are either Romanesque, small and deep, or 16th-century ogival; all are made of diamond-shaped translucent glass. Bays 3 and 5 have Renaissance infills with 19th-century colored ajours, and the building and stained-glass windows were listed as a Monument Historique in 1840.
