Castle of Vendeuvre-sur-Barse

The castle is located in the commune of Vendeuvre-sur-Barse, in the French department of Aube. A deed made in 1603 by François de Luxembourg described the castle as flanked by towers, with a walled park, very costly to maintain. In a second deed, dated 1656, Jean IX de Migrigny is more explicit. He refers to the castle and fortress... with a double drawbridge, consisting of: the large courtyard in a big living body and grand staircase that I had built; a keep and large old tower, chapel, towers, stables... the lower courtyard, closed off by moats and drawbridge, consisting of a dwelling that I also had built. Heavily altered in the 19th century, the castle essentially consists of a large living space of massive appearance, built in the 17th century but largely reusing earlier masonry. The arrival facade, to the north, presents the characteristic layout of the Louis XIII period, with its windows grouped in the center, its cornice with brackets, and its dormers, on the pediment adorned with balls. The south facade, however, owes the rarity of its openings to the thickness of its walls, inherited, like those of the west gable, from the medieval fortress. Flanked on one side by a strong quadrangular tower, and on the other by a small watchtower added in the 19th century, it overlooks terraces dominating a large grassy esplanade, crossed by the Barse which springs beneath the castle itself.
