Monument aux Sociétés coopératives de Reconstruction

More than eight out of ten houses in the center of Soissons disappeared during the First World War. A vast reconstruction project was carried out in the 1920s under the control of the State. The road system was redesigned. New geometrical shapes appeared on the facades. This is the Art Deco style. The Guy de Lubersac monument. This curious construction attracts the eye of the walkers on the place Saint-Christophe in Soissons. It is here that the monument to the work of the cooperative societies for the reconstruction of the liberated regions stands, in memory of Guy de Lubersac. This triumphal arch, classified as a historical monument by decree of September 7, 2001, is one of the first works of art in sculpted concrete, due to the brothers Jean and Joel Martel, and inaugurated in 1935. Measuring 20 meters long and 12 meters high, this monument, in the center of the square, consists of eight columns supporting bas-reliefs: on the left, the destruction and the exodus; on the right, the reconstruction and the work in the fields. Finally, in the center, a portico rises up, in the middle of which is a pylon, topped by a winged allegory symbolizing peace.
