In the north of the Black Périgord and Sarlat, and just a few steps from the Lascaux caves, Saint-Amand-de-Coly is nestled between two wooded valleys. The first known historical document mentioning the existence of a monastery in this village dates back to 1048, but the origins of the place could be much earlier. The religious site and the dwellings are thought to have been built around the hermitage of Amand, a young noble from the Limousin region who evangelized the local populations in the mid-6th century.
Classified among the most beautiful villages in France, Saint-Amand-de-Coly is renowned for its 12th-century abbey, which is one of the most beautiful fortified churches in the Périgord. Its tall silhouette watches over the houses of the village, which, like it, are made of the local Sarlat stone and typical slate of the region, in a harmonious contrast of ochre and gray tones.
