Located 40 km east of Bordeaux, Saint-Émilion is an architectural gem nestled in a setting of vineyards, known for its world-renowned wines. The town was born around the cave where Saint-Émilion, a Breton hermit, lived after retreating in the 8th century to a hermitage carved into the limestone cliff.
The city includes many listed monuments, including the collegiate church, the cloister of the Doyenné, the cloister of the Cordeliers, the monolithic church carved into the rock, and the Tour du Roy. It can be explored via steep alleys called tertres and escalettes here.
The Jurisdiction of Saint-Emilion has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 as a "cultural landscape."
